Responsibilities

What You'll Do The Inpatient Clinical Diabetes Educator (RN or RD) is responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating diabetes self-management training for patients and their families. The diabetes educator must be prepared to provide patients with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage their diabetes. Diabetes educators must possess a body of knowledge that spans across disciplines to provide comprehensive Diabetes Self Management Training (DSMT). As an inpatient Clinical Diabetes Educator, this individual must be prepared to:

  • educate patients on diabetes care-related services appropriate to the acute setting; this includes, and is not limited to, explaining diabetes pathophysiology, initiation of insulin, oral agents and/or other diabetes medications, training on glucometers, working with insulin pumps, and education about self management related hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, chronic complications and foot care.
  • educate staff members about diabetes policies and clinical protocols while being involved in implementing high-quality diabetes care in the hospital setting. The individual must be competent and willing to teach nursing orientation covering diabetes management, the Diabetes Update classes to nurses and also to review diabetes protocols for use in the acute hospital.
    Qualifications

    • BSN or Registered Dietitian (RD) required
    • Oklahoma RN license or Oklahoma LD license Requried
    • Certified Diabetes Educator certification must be obtained within 3 years of hire
