Job Description:
Summary This position is located in the General Surgery
Department at the Claremore Indian Hospital, Claremore, OK. The
incumbent serves as a General Surgeon and has clinical
responsibilities in both in- and out-patient surgical services. The
incumbent reports to the Chief of General Surgery and the Clinical
Director. Relocation incentives are available. A one year service
agreement will be required, failure to fulfill the agreement may
result in repayment. Responsibilities Responsible for the decision
to operate, when to operate, and all technical operatives
procedures, as well as the supervision of pre-operative treatments.
Perform major and minor surgical operations on the integumentary,
respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and skeletal systems
that may include, but are not limited to hernia repair, repair of
lacerations, thyroidectomies, cholecystectomies, radical
mastectomies, gastric and intestinal surgery, nephrectomies,
amputations, and endoscopies. Assign surgical cases of individual
members of the staff in accordance with their referrals, review
clinical records of surgical patients, and give approval for
recommended major surgery. Serve as one of the general surgical
consultants to other PHS medical care facilities in the Oklahoma
City Area Indian Health Service, with responsibility for reviewing
surgical diagnosis, treatment procedures, and policies followed at
the facility. Evaluate the effectiveness of the General Surgery
program at the hospital and make recommendations as needed to the
Chief of Surgery pertaining to policy, initiation of new forms of
treatment, or need for new or improved equipment and facilities.

selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is
required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care

obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including
any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or
maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to

this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or
education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which

professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community;
social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience,
including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly
identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and
the total number of hours per week. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): In order
to qualify for this position, your application must demonstrate
that you meet all three of the following Basic Requirements: 1 -
Degree: Your resume and/or transcripts must reflect that you
possess a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school
in the United States or Canada accredited by either the Council on
Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association
of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical
Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the
American Osteopathic Association, or another accrediting body
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the
degree was obtained. OR Degree from Foreign Medical School: Your
resume and/or transcripts must reflect that you possess a Doctor of
Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that
provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent
to accredited schools in the United States as demonstrated by
permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign
Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who
completed premedical education in the United States and graduate
education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the
U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. 2 - Medical License: You must
possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or
registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia,
the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United
States. 3 - Graduate Training: You must also submit documentation
showing that you have completed at least one (1) year of supervised
experience providing direct service in a clinical setting through
one of the below programs approved by an accrediting body
recognized within the United States or Canada: Completion of an
internship through a hospital or other institution accredited for
internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Completion of a
residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for
training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American
Medical Association (AMA) or ACGME. Completion of a fellowship
program which involved advanced training (beyond residency
training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or
research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the
United States for such training. In addition to the Basic
Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications for the
Grade Level GS-15 as stated below. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your
resume and/or supporting documents must clearly demonstrate that
you possess at least one of the experience and/or graduate training
requirements identified below: GS-15: At least five (5) years of
equivalent experience independently performing in-depth care of
patients by examining, diagnosing, and treating General Surgical
patients. OR Completion of five (5) total years of graduate
training (internship, residency, or fellowship program) related to
the General Surgery specialty. OR A combination of experience in
General Surgery and graduate training (internship, residency, or
fellowship program) that when combined total at least five (5)
years. Selective Placement Factor - Board Certification: In
addition to the above minimum requirements, the following
certification is determined to be essential to perform the duties
and responsibilities of a particular position. Applicants who do
not meet a selective placement factor are ineligible for further
consideration: Board certified or board eligible in their
specialty. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive
service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit
Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of
service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do
not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You
must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the
closing date of the announcement. This is an open until filled

Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to
positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers,
and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on

pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served

service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn
annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.
