Software Engineer - Hybrid Materials Data

Job Description:

UES is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to focus on Hybrid Materials Data processing. We are looking for those with demonstrated strong engineering background and software skills to match to create intelligent digital engineering tools.

  • Agile software development environment The Software/Data Engineer will be an active and collaborative member of the ICMSE (Integrated Computational Materials Science and Engineering) Systems Development team within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, OH. This role will be primarily responsible for data analysis, data modeling, and process modeling, in support of a variety of materials science and engineering subject matters. The analysis and models will be iteratively developed from numerous disparate data sources, in order to support the advancement of research (ex. fatigue life properties in additive manufacturing) and research capabilities (ex. optical character recognition for stress/strain plots) alike. A significant focus within the data modeling activity is the use of procedural generation and AI/ML techniques to both create data models and to fit them to research data to gain better insights and inform future research. Secondary duties include the development of production-grade code to support scalable data analysis and transformation in the broader research organization. This code will be deployed for use by scientists and engineers as part of a larger research application framework, so an understanding of full-stack web technologies is essential. Additional responsibilities include developing systems for the effective transfer and loading of large data sets from federated hardware and software resources, preferably using automated scripting. Successful candidates will have excellent oral and written communication skills and be excited to work in a collaborative environment with engineers from different technical backgrounds. Requirements:
    • BS Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field of study is required.
    • Minimum of 2 year of applicable experience in engineering data and systems development is required (co-op or internship experience can be included). Practical experience is paramount .
    • Demonstrable analytical and problem-solving skills are required
    • Demonstrable organization and time management skills are required
    • This position will require careful attention to detail
